I was pondering local spaces for arts and possibly funding. I think you might not know about it, but The Albany in Douglas Way in Deptford is really supportive of local artists and projects, and they are friendly to the point of being a little scary. This weekend, in case you didnt know, is the Made in Deptford festival, and will feature all sorts of local artists, musicians, etc. It's part of a larger project to "revitalise" the Deptford area. In terms of space, theres this awesome cafe/old train carriage/gallery/art platform on Deptford High Street called the Deptford Project that is awesome and would be a good place to hang a show and they would probably have good ideas for funding sources. Pardon me for pluggin my little bit of London and not helping you out with other place/funding ideas. what can I say, im "community-oriented"? here's the links

hope its helpful, and in any case, im gonna go check out what the "working" people of deptford and new cross are doing at the Made in Deptford festival this weekend. Might generate some ideas/projects/rantings/questions.

My point was not that we can't improve the Centre for Cultural Studies, but that accusations or complaints about who is a Red Guard or not are unproductive. I think its fair to say most people here, both staff and students, have massive dedication and loyalty to CCS and to Goldsmiths - so attacks upon them (or each other) are reprehensible when carried out on a public forum like this. Criticism should be part of the renovation of how we do things, and there are various ways that continually takes place - athq was one - but this surely shouldn't be reduced to just a winge session when our (radical sounding but real) enemies are elsewhere. J.

Besides all these oh-sound-so-radical stuff, why can't we firstly concentrate on improving the organic linkage between students and the centre itself? It is always a good idea to deconstruct and reconstruct our base once in a while, but the biggest problem of CCS for lots of students is the isolation and sense of loss when studying in this insitiution.

Yes we hate the concept of institution and we try our best to get rid of all the shortcoming and constraint it might imply, but the teaching in CCS itself is quite chaotic, anarchic, often without any logical order. I have heard lots of complains from MA students regarding their terrible experience when first entering our centre. Why don't we get the basic job done then we can start to think big and think differently, alternatively, and radically.

[...] A year long contract - another reason why lack of adequate funding for research and why forced temporary and short term employment contract research ain’t a good way to run a University. Thanks Kee, who pointed out the piece, which links up nicely with this. [...]

I am thinking of that part in Critique of Exotica where you quote from that flyer where the author was making fun of the idea of a world where everyone "works" at think-tanks.
